Welcome to Marbled Arts

Twenty years ago I was accepted into the UW certificate program in Scientific Illustration. As a result, I was eager to find botanicals (painted and sketched) from previous eras. Searching in rare-book shops, I found a cache of botanicals from 17th and 18th century France, Germany, Italy and England. In most cases those books had marbled end papers, or the botanicals themselves were framed with marbled papers. It was only a matter of time before I found a printmaker in Seattle with whom I learned the classical art; then over many years I marbled independently and with students and colleagues to gain mastery of the art.
A major shift occurred two years ago when I took a workshop in Portland with marbler and painter Liz Walker. She revealed how marbled papers, through the addition of acrylic painting and collage, could be transformed into imaginal subjects which would require, for me, a willingness to face (in D. Winnicott's words)-"the dread of being daring."
One question arose--How would I respond uniquely to this new paradigm? The answers would come by doing the work . . . over and over and over. In a poem I wrote at the time, "Testifying in Your Stead" the last stanza reads:
Dare to be alive,
Rest here inside
the sweep and swell
of your imaginative longings.
Then and now . . .
the earth and sky
will testify in your stead.
My "stead" is a devotion to the classical tradition of marbling while fusing it with contemporary painting and collage.
Gallery is an overview of my accumulated work; Step by Step gives examples of the development from marbled paper to finished painting; Portraits is a new page to debut my paintings of family and friends. Spring Collection 2020 highlights my paintings based on walks across the island as I stretch and move after hours of sheltering in place. Origami Light Strings is a new addition for the winter season. Finally, Get in Touch will connect us.
Thank you for visiting my site.
